Project Location:
Howes Optical, Royston

After many years of servicing the old clock at Howe’s Opticians in the High Street, Royston, we were advised that the clock had been vandalised. We attended site the next day to inspect and possibly repair the clock but unfortunately the damage was extensive and the clock was beyond economical repair.
As the clock was an intrinsic part of the High Street the client was adamant that the clock should be replaced. Rather than provide a modern everyday alternative we offered to manufacture a new clock exactly to the original specification but using modern materials.
The old damaged clock was removed from site and taken to our workshops for stripping down and design drawings were produced. We then fabricated the new clock which featured a small chimney like structure similar to the original clock and with borders of gold leafed around each dial. The case was manufactured from high grade aluminium and powder coated gloss black, the dials are ICI grade UV rated perspex with laser cut applied aluminium Roman numeral skeleton dials, spray painted and gold leafed.
The movements are modern mains impulse with stainless steel shafts for use with exposed hands and IP65 rated for protection against water penetration. The dials are illuminated from inside via waterproof LED lighting which uses less power than fluorescent bulbs and is therefore better for the environment.
The clock was installed onto the original wall mounting bracket which was rubbed down and repainted to complete the installation.
